In order to apply for Vietnam at the embassy or consulates, you will need to go there twice at least. First time, you will submit all required paperwork including:

- Your valid passport: original passport with 6 months validity at least beyond the arrival date
- Application form: can be downloaded in the embassy's website or get it at the embassy
- 2 photos: photos taken within 6 months of the application date at the passport size
- Sponsorship letter from a licensed Vietnamese company (for 3 months multiple entry visa application only)
- Visa fee: normally the embassy will charge US$80 for 1 month single entry visa or US$120 for 1 month multiple entry visa.

You'll be given a receipt and after 4-5 working days you will return to get your passport back with a visa stamped on it.

If you are living far from Vietnam Embassy or Consulates in Australia then you are strongly recommended to apply for Vietnam visa on arrival to save your time and money. With its convenience, you don't have to leave your home or office and neither do supply any paperwork to apply for a visa. You can stay at home, make an online application and get visa approval letter via email within 2 working days (or even in a few hours). The processing fee which you will pay to the Vietnam visa agency will be around US$10 - US$15 for 1 month single entry visa and US$20 for multiple entry visa. At arrival airport, you will pay another stamping fee (in cash) which costs US$45 for 1 month single entry or US$65 for 29 days multiple entry visa. The total cost in this case is just from US$55 - US$60 for 1 month single entry visa and US$85 for 29 days multiple entry visa which is much cheaper than visa made in the Vietnam Embassy.

Tips: If your apply for Vietnam visa on arrival, you should prepare the stamping fee in USD or Vietnamese Dong before leaving for Vietnam since there is no ATM machine, money changer or any other way to withdraw money in the Immigration hall at arrival airport.
