Vietnam - Argentina relations
The Peron Administration of the Argentine Republic established diplomatic relations with the Democratic Republic of Vietnam on October 25th, 1973. In January, 1995, Vietnam opened its Embassy in Buenos Aires. In February, 1997, President Menem paid an official visit to Vietnam and inaugurated the Argentine Embassy in Hanoi.
The two countries have exchanged a number of high-ranking delegations and signed numerous Agreements on Cooperation, namely, Investment Promotion and Reciprocal Protection, Economic and Trade Cooperation, Cooperation on Agriculture and Industry, Animal Health Cooperation, MOU on the Mechanism of Political Consultation between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs (1996), Agreement on Scientific and Technological Cooperation, Agreement on State Inspection Cooperation (1997), MOU of Sports (1999), Cooperation on Culture and Education (2000), and Agreement on use of nuclear for peaceful purposes (2002). The two sides concluded negotiations on Vietnam's WTO admission in November, 2004. Argentina supported Vietnam for its candidature of non-permanent member of UNSC for the 2008-2009 term (September, 2006).
The bilateral trade turnover has lately witnessed a sharp increase. In 2005, the volume totaled $ 294 millions, six times higher compared to the year of 2001 and twice compared to the year of 2003. Vietnam's main exports are garment, footwear, rubber, electric-electronic products, steam-boiler, mechanical equipment, wooden products, motor and bicycle spare parts, suitcases, handbags and handicrafts. Vietnam's imports are mainly vegetable oil, cigarette raw material, pharmaceutical products, chemical and plastic products, all kind of fibers, textile materials, machinery, cars and its components, milk and lactose, wood and animal food.
